While this could be a dump-and-go recipe, the extra prep steps improve the flavor immensely. Brown, sauté, deglaze, and then add everything to the slow cooker.
Adding heavy cream in the final 30 minutes makes the sauce wonderfully creamy. Don't add it too early or the cream will separate from the sauce and turn grainy.
